How to create and delete Encryption Keys in nokVAULT?
This is an online guide for creating and deleting encryption keys in nokVAULT. If you wish, you can download the PDF User Guide, which includes a copy of these procedures.
You can create and assign an unlimited number of individual encryption keys during the encryption process. Keys can be used for encrypting your files on any media and for exporting files when sharing with other people. You can easily manage your Keys in the Keys section within the nokVAULT main menu. You can also modify the Default Key settings anytime, which were specified during the installation of nokVAULT, in the Configuration section within the nokVAULT main menu.
Part of the nokVAULT encryption process is to assign a key that will permit you the authority to access a file or folder that was encrypted. You can choose the existing Default key to encrypt a file or folder or you can create a new key for each file.
To create a new key:
1) Begin Encrypting a file (see How to Encrypt a File or Folder)
2) Select “New Key”
3) Create a name for your new key
4) Select the Encryption method and the Key size
5) Create a password for your new key based on the Key size
The length of the password you create will be dependent on the Encryption method and the Key size that you chose. The strength of your key will depend on its length and complexity.
Remember: the longer and more complicated the key is, the more secure it is.
The parenthesis located above the “Type:” input box will guide you on how many characters are required for your password to create your key.
6) Check the box to “Hide Characters” if you wish to restrict the characters of the password with asterisks
7) Click “Create”
The newly created Key will automatically populate in the drop-down menu within the Choose Key window.
8) Select the newly created key from the drop-down menu
9) Click “OK” to encrypt a file with the newly created key
How to Delete Keys
It is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that you keep a written copy of all your encryption Keys stored away from your computer in the event the Key(s) needed to recover your important files are accidentally deleted.
In order to delete a Key, there must be no known encrypted files protected by the Key you want to delete. Protected files are shown in the Protected Files window in the User Keys menu. However, even if you remove protection from all protected files and your system confirms that there are “No files protected by this key, other than files that may have been exported”, THERE STILL MAY BE OTHER FILES ENCRYPTED BY THE KEY you are trying to delete. Take extra caution when deleting keys and keep a written copy of all your keys in case you need to recover certain files that you may have encrypted and forgotten about.
To Delete a Key:
1) Select “Keys” from the nokVAULT main menu
2) Select the key you wish to delete from the Encryption Keys section within the User Keys window below
3) Click “Delete Key”
4) Click “Yes“ if you are absolutely sure that you want to delete the Key
