How to Import and Export files in nokVAULT?

This is an online guide for importing and exporting files in nokVAULT. If you wish, you can download the PDF User Guide, which includes a copy of these procedures.

nokVAULT Import-Export functionality was designed for the sharing of encrypted files with other nokVAULT users. The nokVAULT exporting feature allows you to Export any nokVAULT encrypted file as a .NOK file.

You can only export nokVAULT encrypted files. Exporting is simply the process of taking an encrypted file, generating a copy for the sole purpose of emailing it to another nokVAULT user. We recommend that you Export encrypted files with a different key from the one used to originally encrypt the file. Create and use new Keys that you are willing to share with the recipients of the documents you will be emailing. This way your personal files on your computer are encrypted with your private and confidential Key(s), while files that you want to share are Exported and encrypted with the new set of Keys.

Importing .NOK files simply decrypts the encrypted file(s) received via email for use in your system. To view the exported .NOK file, once you have received it via email, open the .NOK attachment and use the assigned key that was used to Export the .NOK file by the sender.

TO EXPORT A FILE:
1) Open nokVAULT
2) Right-click any encrypted file that you wish to Export
3) Select “Export” from the nokVAULT sub-menu
4) Click “YES” from the popup warning message window below

5) Select or create the Key you wish to use for Export and click “OK”

In the example below, you will notice that nokVAULT created a copy of the original encrypted file, which is a new Exported and encrypted .NOK file with the original file name appended with the words EXPORTED COPY in front of it. The new .NOK file contains an Export Icon identifying it is the new Exported file ready to be emailed.

TO IMPORT A FILE:

The nokVAULT importing function serves only as the method of retrieving an already Exported file sent to you by another nokVAULT user.

It is IMPERATIVE that you ONLY import files with .NOK extension, which were exported and emailed to you by another nokVAULT user. Attempting to Import ANY OTHER FILES that are either encrypted or decrypted, WILL BE LOST AND ARE UNRECOVERABLE immediately after completing the import process!

1) Open your vault
2) Save the EXPORTED .NOK file to your desired location within your computer
3) Right-click the Exported file containing the .NOK file extension that you wish to Import and open
4) Select “Import” from the nokVAULT sub-menu
5) Click “YES” on the popup warning message about Importing files

6) Select the Key associated to the newly Imported file OR you may create a new Key using the exact settings of the original Key provided to you by the sender and click “OK”

Once you have imported the received .NOK file, the icon will immediately replace the Export Icon with the standard Encryption icon.

The Imported file will remain Encrypted, and is now part of your nokVAULT system like all other Encrypted files. The file will still contain the words EXPORTED COPY appended in front of its name in order to identify that it was a file that was once exported. You can now open this file, rename it, decrypt it, and use it like any other personal nokVAULT file.
